Homeschool Conversations

Our monthly Homeschool Conversations are held at various times and days in an attempt to see that no Chapel Hill Homeschooler is excluded from attending due to scheduling conflicts. Our Conversation leaders have structured our meetings to provide a separate time for discussion of a particular topic of interest, as well as a time for questions, problem solving, general encouragement and support. Regardless of your educational methodology, faith, or parenting philosophy, you will be welcomed into a group where we all focus on our love for our children and our desire to educate them at home.

Upcoming topics:

January- Homeschooling High School  Join one of our "founding mothers" and other CHH members to learn the challenges and rewards of homeschooling children in high school.

February - UNC Admissions  Special guest Bob Patterson, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, will speak and answer questions on home school applications and UNC admissions.

March - Community Colleges  Special guest Brian Webb from Alamance Community College will answer questions on community college, programs and classes available to home school students and how to apply.  Several CHH parents will also be at the meeting to share their experiences using community colleges.

April - Homeschooling-on-the-road  Join us for a special conversation with three traveling veterans for tips and ideas on how to "get out of Dodge" and "head West!" to enhance your learning experience.  We will talk about geography, history and geo-caching just in time to make your plans for summer.

May - Fabulous Field Trips  Join us for a conversation on how to prepare and follow-up on field trips to make sure they are a great learning experience.

June - Iced Tea and Summer Breezes  Join us on the porch to celebrate the coming summer break.  Conversations will meander in and out of what worked and what didn't for your family this school year.

Please see the yahoogroup for details of time and place!

Field Trips & Activities

The Chapel Hill Homeschoolers, as with any homeschool support group, offer various field trips and activities for our students during the school year. We are very excited to have an exceptionally motivated Activity Coordinator this year who is planning numerous events for us. In addition to traditional field trips, she has been planning various activity days, which have included such activities as rock painting, and t-shirt decorating in the past. We are so pleased to see all this excitement and enthusiasm develop in our homeschooling community.

Friday Enrichment

Chapel Hill Homeschoolers' Friday Enrichment was created to provide enrichment opportunities for children of all ages. Ten-week sessions are held on Friday mornings in the fall and then again in the spring to provide hands-on experiences and a chance to socialize for our children. Enrichment is the key term in describing the Friday programs. You never know what unique and interesting class may be offered, from chemistry to language, from history to arts and crafts, there is bound to be some class that will whet your child's intellectual appetite.

Odyssey of the Mind/Destination Imagination

Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination are organizations that offer team problem solving competitions each spring. The programs teach students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve those problems. The Chapel Hill Homeschoolers have several teams compete each year with the number of teams depending on the number of interested students. In the past, we have had many teams place well in the World's competition. This is a very popular program that has a strong appeal to the motivated student.
